Is This an STD?! How to Identify Condyloma

Our clinic accepts consultations via phone and email, and we receive various questions. One of the most frequent questions is about how to identify genital warts, also known as condyloma acuminatum.

What are the Initial Symptoms of Condyloma Acuminatum?

Many patients tend to suspect they might have condyloma acuminatum following this sequence:

  1. Noticed a small wart on the penis a while ago. ↓
  2. Thought it was just a pimple but it never went away. ↓
  3. Felt like it got bigger and the number increased. ↓
  4. Researched on the internet and it seems to be an STD called "condyloma acuminatum".

Ideally, one should visit a clinic at the first or second sign, but most people do not suspect an STD infection, leading to prolonged neglect. Since condyloma acuminatum is caused by a strong virus, neglecting it leads to growth and a longer time for complete healing. When people search for images of condyloma acuminatum online, they often find ones that look like "fan-shaped or wavy structures", similar to a rooster's comb, which leads some to mistakenly believe they are not affected.

Characteristics of Condyloma Acuminatum

Condyloma acuminatum can vary in shape, with the following types being common:

  • Rooster comb type
  • Small granular type
  • Cluster of small granules resembling peeled tangerine (or a clementine)
  • Large granules grouped together, resembling corned beef

The colors can also vary from white, reddish, skin tone, brown, to nearly black. They are painless, do not produce pus, and tend to grow slowly while spreading, which is why it often takes time to notice them.

To Prevent Worsening Symptoms, First Seek Medical Consultation

In men, these bumps appear in visible areas of the penis, but for women, since they are inside the vagina and not visible without proper examination, it's much harder for them to notice, demanding extra caution.

To completely cure condyloma acuminatum, it's crucial to "detect it in the early stages" and "get immediate treatment". If you suspect something unusual like these bumps, please consult us immediately.
